Full Circle was commissioned for the 2019 Triennial Crown of Rays at KMAC Contemporary Art Museum in Louisville, KY.  The sculpture addresses as its theme, the cycle of growth and collapse.  The process of making the artwork was deeply personal for Carothers, as she was creating the sculpture while witnessing her father’s final decline.

A porcelain cast of a taxidermied elk forms the foundation over which salt crystals were grown, referencing its dual nature as a compound both essential and inhospitable to life. The elk rests on a bed of 2000 pounds salt, evoking a frozen landscape.

Carothers was seeking to discover intimacy in the understated and reflecting to the viewer their own imagined notions of the temporal and regenerative.

Full Circle was acquired by 21c Art Museum.
